Shahid is the captain of his office cricket team. Though he had been sick before, the other night was different.
In 1996, Shahid was diagnosed with severe pneumonia (inflammation of the lungs) and suffered from several repetitive pneumonia episodes a year. Hence, his doctor advised him to carry epinephrine (adrenaline) all the time to prevent worsening his condition.
When Shahid was brought to Sharda Hospital for pneumonia treatment, the doctors found out his illness was not only limited to pneumonia. After ordering some tests, the results confirmed of cystic fibrosis, a disorder that causes damage to the lungs, digestive system and other organs in the body.
Shahid was referred to see Dr. Shailendra Nath Gaur, expert and specialist in Respiratory Medicine and Tuberculosis. When the doctor explained him about cystic fibrosis, Shahid recalled, he had experienced the symptoms since he was 4-5 years of age.
"I suffered from frequent pneumonia, difficulty in breathing, wheezing, and stomach problems. The other doctors would just prescribe antibiotics and medication. However, they were unable to find the cause." - says Shahid
Without delaying any further, Dr. Gaur began with chest physical therapy treatment to help loosen the mucus and promote un-obstructive breathing. He also suggested physical exercises and certain breathing techniques that helped in improving Shahid's condition.
After undergoing the treatment for 3 months, Shahid experienced a great difference in his condition. He did not feel shortness of breath anymore while walking. He felt fit and healthy after a long time.
