Anjali Yadav, a 16-year old, was preparing for her school triathlon. The winner of the competition was to be awarded with free scholarship for an entire session of 10+2. Coming from a financially unstable background, this scholarship meant everything to her.
One morning, as she woke up for practice, she experienced tingling and numbness in her fingers and toes.
She neglected the symptoms thinking they will go away as she gets moving. The following morning, she woke up only to realize that her entire body was numb. As per her parents, she was barely able to keep her head up. Besides, she was also facing problems in breathing.
When Anjali was brought to the Sharda Hospital, she was in an unconscious state. The doctors asked to admit her to the ICU. Even when Anjali was unconscious, she was groaning with pain.
Looking at her symptoms, the doctor suggested a lumbar puncture test. The reports were out and she was diagnosed with the Guillain-Barre Syndrome. In this condition, mainly patient’s feet, hands and limbs are affected. These may further cause problems such as weakness, pain and numbness.
She could not move any of her arms or legs. Also, she was so weak that she had to be kept on a medical ventilator to survive. It was a very crucial time as her immobility could have led her to permanent paralysis. The nurses kept her moving in order to avoid any further complications.
Due to the early functional mobility provided by the doctors, she was discharged within a week of starting the treatment. Post intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIG) and few orthopedics sessions, the doctor gave her a heads up for competing in the triathlon.
She is now again training for her competition and is positive to win it anyhow. Also, she has good wishes from everyone at the Sharda Hospital!
