Prematurely Born Anemic Receives Treatment Within An Hour

Overview

Rhea was prematurely born at 8 months and became anemic due to a rare blood type incompatibility. Dr. Nimmi Chutani, HOD, Gynaecology & Obstetrics, confirmed she required a blood transfusion after being diagnosed at Sharda Hospital.

Since the newborn was premature, she was suffering from various health complications. In due course of time, a lot of blood was drawn due to her often tenuous condition.

As Rhea's condition was critical, the doctor immediately prepared the newborn for the procedure. Dr. Chutani placed an intravenous (IV) line onto her body to replace lost components of the blood. Since the newborn had lost a large amount of blood by then, the doctor contacted Dr. Priyanka Chadha of the Blood Bank department to arrange for Packed red blood cells (PRBCs) compatible with her blood group.

Fortunately, the hospital's blood bank had the rare blood group PRBCs. The doctor continued with the process and within one hour of struggle and highly-focused efforts, Rhea was out of danger.

"Till today, we feel scared of what would have happened if the hospital had no supply of those PRBCs. We are indebted by the constant support and compassionate care of the healthcare team." - Rhea's Parents
